International Day of Peace 2012

Peace Day: Individuals Celebrating Peace

This year, the International Day of Peace 2012 is on Friday September 21st. The International Day of Peace, a.k.a. "Peace Day" provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date.
In 2002 the General Assembly officially declared September 21st as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace.

Special activities and celebrations will take place all across the world over the 2012 Peace Day Weekend, including festivals, concerts, a global Peace Wave with moments of silence at noon in every time zone, and much more. Whether it's through music, sports, dance or art, Peace Day is about spreading peace your way. Whatever action you take to mark this day is up to you.

Here at Claremorris Community Radio, we will be celebrating Peace Day by broadcasting a very special Peace Day programme on Friday September 21st at 5pm.

Claremorris Community Radio to Feature in Nationally Broadcast Radio Series

The first thing that I got from community radio was that it gave me access to something that I never thought I could get access for” - Evans Shirihuru - Community Radio Volunteer

These are the opening words of “A Voice for Communities”, a new 6 part documentary series that explores the ideas behind and the impact of Community Radio in Ireland. Claremorris Community Radio features prominently in the series which was launched by the Chief Executive of the Broadcasting Authority Michael O’Keeffe on Saturday (May 26th) at the Annual Craol Community Radio Féile in Athlone.

The series will be broadcast across Ireland on over 25 Community Radio Stations. The series begins on Claremorris Community Radio 94.6fm on Saturday June 9th at 2pm and will be repeated on Fridays at 5pm.

A Voice for Communities” maps a unique nationwide community-based movement which is rapidly changing. At the launch, Albertine Denis the Chairperson of Craol recognised that “Community Radio stations are so busy providing a space for their communities to tell their stories, that the compelling narrative of which they are a part, has until now remained unheard. “ She added “This series captures the complexities behind the scenes, marrying stories of the huge voluntary effort involved, with the impacts of community radio stations on the communities we serve”.
A Voice for Communities” aims to give listeners an insight into the broadcasting process and the ideas and challenges underlying the establishment of community stations. Such stations are rooted in their community and reflect the passions, challenges, stories, and people of their community- their stories make for compelling listening both for the communities they serve and beyond.
A Voice for Communities” enables the listener to feel a sense of an unfolding story that they too can be a part of. . Launching the series Michael O’Keeffe said “The BAI is delighted to have provided funding support to this innovative programme series which demonstrates the positive impact of community radio on communities through the country. Congratulations to all involved in the making of this documentary series.”

This landmark series is produced by Grey Heron Media working with community radio stations nationwide for Craol the Community Radio Forum of Ireland, and will be broadcast across Ireland by over twenty five of Craol’s member stations. It was made with the support of Sound and Vision, an initiative of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Community Radio in Ireland has a collective weekly reach of 307, 465 adults and 6 out of 10 people value its impact on their community very highly, according to the findings of the first ever independent survey on Community Radio in Ireland by RED C / Grey Heron Media on behalf of Craol.

According to the research which was collected through 504 face to face interviews conducted at 23 sample points around the country where Community Radio is available, collected data on a range of issues including the awareness of, value of and the opportunities offered by Community Radio in Ireland.

Respondents highlighted the important part that Community Radio plays in terms of Community Development and the sharing of knowledge and experience.

  • 67% of all adults surveyed are aware that a Community Radio Station exists in their area, while 78% of those who were aware of a community radio station knew that the station was in fact a community station
  • 21% know that "anyone from the community can get involved"
  • 6 in 10 of all survey respondents in the catchment attributed a very high value rating to Community Radio, when asked specifically about the impact of Community Radio on your community / area. The high value rating is even greater (71%) among current listeners to Community Radio
  • 30% of respondents have listened to any streamed or online radio programme on the internet. 17% of 18 - 24 year olds have downloaded a radio podcast

New 3-part Series Coming to Claremorris Community Radio

"Onboard the Titanic - 1,000 Miles from Home"

In April 1912, fourteen young men and women from the small county Mayo village of Lahardane departed Cobh, or Queenstown, as it was then known, on the RMS Titanic.
Eleven of those fourteen perished in the disaster, and the village of Lahardane represents the largest proportionate loss of life from any locality on the ill-fated Titanic.

Onboard the Titanic 1,000 Miles from Home, vividly re-creates the tragic story of the "unsinkable" Titanic and the Lahardane Fourteen, as they are now known, by incorporating the history, folklore, the macabre tales, along with the music associated with the ship once dubbed " a monument to human presumption".

This three-part series from the producers of “ Irish Heroes Poets & Villains” will start on Claremorris Community Radio on Saturday April 28th at 2pm and repeated on Fridays at 5pm.

Good Friday Walk

Please WALK, DONATE, SPONSOR CONTRIBUTE to the ORPHANS and VULNERABLE CHILDREN OF KITUI, KENYA.

Yes, it's nearly Good Friday and your chance to participate in the GOOD FRIDAY WALK and assist in what ever way you can to help improve the lives of the most vulnerable and poverty striken children in Kenya. For the past 3 years you have supported the needy children, their parents, carers and guardians by giving very generously of yourself and your contributions have made such a difference to their lives.

Claremorris Community Radio volunteer Janet Hinchion personally oversees that your monies are used appropriately in 4 projects. You make a difference in the lives of 2 families where she has initiated, with Muthale Home Care, a self-sustainability programme. This means that in the case of one family you are assisting them with sending 6 children to primary school, you have educated the 2nd eldest for the past 2 years to train as a dressmaker and who now is self employed and is assisting with supporting the family. This family are orphaned through AIDS and when Janet first came across them they had NOTHING, not even a bed to sleep in and they hadn't eaten for 3 days!!! This family very much appreciate your help.

The second family are not in a position to be self-sustainable because the grandmother is in her 80's and unable to attend to the needs of the 2 children who also are orphaned through AIDS. The young girl is 15 and was raped by a neighbour some years ago, thankfully she is not HIV positive and is undergoing counselling . Her brother was born HIV positive, he is responding to treatment and is doing well. On your behalf Janet has employed a local lady to do the cooking, washing and ensures that the young boy gets his medication and attends hospital visits. You also supply the food. To both of those families, on your behalf, a total of €2,400 has been donated to them and this will sustain them until June 2012.

Your other project Tulia Poly Tech, a school for disadvantaged girls, has benefited very much in the past through structural development, water harvesting, school supplies, assistance with school fees, provision of a teacher of English and Maths and improvement in the diet of the girls allowing them meat once a week and milk three times a week. This year Janet has only been able to support them with school materials, diet improvement and a supply of personal effects like soap, sanitary towels, toothpaste. Your contribution until June 2012 has been €800.
For this the management and the students are very appreciative.

The biggest venture of the year has been the opening of the KDC (Kitui Development Centre) Rescue, Therapy and Personal Development Centre. We in KDC, a Non Governmental Organization, have been involved in a Child Labour Eradication Programme with the assistance of International Labour Organization. Child Labour is a huge problem in the Kitui area and we are involved in both preventiona and withdrawl of children from the labour market. To date we have succeeded in assisting over 1,000 children to return and remain in school by supplying them with uniforms, books and school fees. Approx 350 children withdrawn form the labour market, some are in residential training and others in traineeships in beauty and hair care, tailoring and mechanics. This is the really difficult side of the work as some of the children are not ready to go back to formal education and this is where the Centre comes in as a necessity. Janet personally works with the children through group sessions, counselling and active learning so that they can become confident and self assured in order to take the opportunity of returning to school and training.
This will give them a wonderful opportunity of being employable, engage in self employment and become self sufficient. In turn this will be a motivational factor for further training of siblings and friends thus reducing the enormity of the Worst Forms of Child Labour. Of course there are other groups that have to be involved in the process: parents, guardians, carers, employers, Chamber of Commerce, Municipal Council and many Gov. Departments and much training and co-operation has to take place for the programme to succeed. The good news is that a building has been leased where all these activities can take place thus saving on costs and also it is a source of sustainability as they can also hire out the hall for trainings and meetings.

The process of purchasing land is ongoing but the progress is very slow and rather than let our concept and idea die it was thought better to lease a property, get active and working, so some of the funds raised are being used in this way.
As you can imagine this is a huge project but a very necesssary one and if you can assist in any way it would be tremendous.
"We are running the Centre on a shoe string at the moment, it is very sparcely furnished and equipped and as time goes on there will be many demands on us in providing the service. Capital expenditure to date includes furniture and fittings, office and educational equipment which amounted to €1,250 and monthly costs average about €200. This is working with minimal staff and my own contribution to the centre is free of charge as I work voluntarily on all the projects, finance myself and my flights there and back so you can rest assured that every cent goes directly into the projects.
I also keep a contingency fund so that contributions can be made to families in very special cases, for example a family of 3 generations live in a very limited space with no income whatsoever and are deserted by the father because the mother has given birth to the 7th girl child and there is no male child born to him!!!! other situations would be paying school fees, buying food, assisting with funeral expenses, medications, AND I never give money into the hand!!! there is accountability for what is given," says Janet

Please support this worthy cause on Good Friday by joining in the walk or alternatively you can donate money to the account in AIB Claremorris: KENYAN PROJECTS, A/C No. 08771096 Sort Code 93-74-44 or through Paypal on www.kidsofkitui.com
If you would like a Sponsorship cards, they are available at Bláthanna Florists, Shine, Claremorris Community Radio Station and Janet Corbin Hinchion on 087 2683327.

The walk takes place on Good Friday at Hinchion's Stables, Caltra.
Free registration from 10.15 and walk begins at 11am through Castlemagarrett, Crossboyne and back to Caltra for refreshments and your Certificates.

New poll reveals high levels of concern around news bias towards owners views and around concentration of ownership.

A new nationwide Red C / Grey Heron poll carried out on behalf of Craol has indicated high levels of concern around news bias towards owners views and around concentration of ownership.

The poll has found that nearly 80% of all adults in the Republic of Ireland agree that news and current affairs is sometimes biased towards the views of its owners, and that in a poll of 1005 adults nationwide - 3 in 4 adults worry that people / businesses have too much ownership of the media.

Over 90% believe that community radio brings a social benefit to the communities they serve but there are low levels of awareness to the fact that communities can set up their own station.

Tina Heffernan, Chair of Craol, explains that “Community radio gives communities, and the groups and individuals within those communities a voice with which to be heard”.
She added “The community not only gains in having a broader diversity in listening options, they also gain a forum for sharing experience, discovering fresh perspectives, and supporting community activity.”

Under the 2009 Broadcasting Act, Community Radio was legally defined for the first time with a definition of being representative and accountable to the communities they serve, being not-for-profit, and delivering a social benefit to their community

Community Radio is regulated by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. There are 24 Stations currently operating 10 year licences.
The 2009 Act also introduced temporary licences for community sound broadcasting services of up to 100 days per annum for communities exploring the viability of setting up a community radio service.

The Broadcasting Authority proposed to introduce a more open licensing process for new community radio services in its Draft Broadcasting Services Strategy published in August 2011.

Listen back to Claremorris Community Radio documentaries

A number of the documentaries broadcast on Claremorris Community Radio over the past few months are now available to listen to as podcasts.

Just click on the links to listen!

Galtymore Dance Hall, London.
For countless Irish emigrants to London during the 20th century the Galtymore in Cricklewood, London was more than just a dance-hall. It was a home from home, a piece of Ireland where each weekend they could meet Irish friends from all over London, hear the music from the Irish country and showband scene and better still, get to see the showband stars in person.

The Galtymore was the original Ballroom of Romance and many a lifelong relationship began at this famous dancehall.

"Home From Home at the Galtymore" is a documentary which looks back on the glittering life and times of this infamous dance hall, and records the closing nights of the Galtymore, speaking to some of the many Irish who have fond memories of the renowned dance hall.

Twenty years ago Clare Lake was dying, a no go area for nature lovers. The water itself was a red soup, noxious with the effluent of the adjacent bacon factory; it didn't help that the creamery was across the road and that the lake's bank had long been the town dump.
Retrieved from the clutches of industrial pollution some twenty years ago and following a Foróige Environmental Project in 1988, the prospect of real ecological renewal dawned on certain optimists of the development committee; their bold vision was of a municipal park on the erstwhile wasteland.

With a great deal of work and willpower from the local community, the whole area was turned into what it is today - a beautiful national park.

Now it is a picturesque parkland and lakeland idyll and one of the town's showpieces.

This is the rags to riches story of Clare Lake.

The 12-part series details the lives and legacies of 12 Irish men and women whose stories remain largely overlooked to this day, yet influenced the world as they knew it and as we know it today. “Irish Heroes, Poets and Villains” features several Mayo names such as Abbey Theatre director Frederick Robert Higgins, better known to Patrick Kavanagh as the "Gallivanting Poet", Michael Mac Ruaidhri - author, folklorist, horticulturist and 1916 rebel, as well as Barney Moran - a member of the travelling community and former British soldier who assisted in the execution of Robert Emmet.

While telling the tales of these individuals, the series also incorporates various aspects of heritage, folklore traditions, local and academic history with contemporary music, song, and poetry all of which has been specifically recorded for the series.

Musical Director for the series was Ballina native Padraig MacNally, with special guest musician Steve Wickham of the Waterboys.

Irish Heroes, Poets and Villains” will be broadcast every Wednesday at 4pm on Claremorris Community Radio over the next 12 weeks. Listeners in the local area can listen in on 94.6fm and people can also tune in from anywhere in the world via the stations website, www.claremorriscommunityradio.ie.
