New poll reveals high levels of concern around news bias towards owners views and around concentration of ownership.

A new nationwide Red C / Grey Heron poll carried out on behalf of Craol has indicated high levels of concern around news bias towards owners views and around concentration of ownership.

The poll has found that nearly 80% of all adults in the Republic of Ireland agree that news and current affairs is sometimes biased towards the views of its owners, and that in a poll of 1005 adults nationwide - 3 in 4 adults worry that people / businesses have too much ownership of the media.

Over 90% believe that community radio brings a social benefit to the communities they serve but there are low levels of awareness to the fact that communities can set up their own station.

Tina Heffernan, Chair of Craol, explains that “Community radio gives communities, and the groups and individuals within those communities a voice with which to be heard”.

She added “The community not only gains in having a broader diversity in listening options, they also gain a forum for sharing experience, discovering fresh perspectives, and supporting community activity.”

Under the 2009 Broadcasting Act, Community Radio was legally defined for the first time with a definition of being representative and accountable to the communities they serve, being not-for-profit, and delivering a social benefit to their community

Community Radio is regulated by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. There are 24 Stations currently operating 10 year licences.

The 2009 Act also introduced temporary licences for community sound broadcasting services of up to 100 days per annum for communities exploring the viability of setting up a community radio service.

The Broadcasting Authority proposed to introduce a more open licensing process for new community radio services in its Draft Broadcasting Services Strategy published in August 2011.

Home From Home at the Galtymore

Galtymore Dance Hall, London.

For countless Irish emigrants to London during the 20th century the Galtymore in Cricklewood, London was more than just a dance-hall. It was a home from home, a piece of Ireland where each weekend they could meet Irish friends from all over London, hear the music from the Irish country and showband scene and better still, get to see the showband stars in person.

The Galtymore was the original Ballroom of Romance and many a lifelong relationship began at this famous dancehall.

"Home From Home at the Galtymore" is a documentary which looks back on the glittering life and times of this infamous dance hall, and records the closing nights of the Galtymore, speaking to some of the many Irish who have fond memories of the renowned dance hall.

Polluted Wasteland to Inspiring Wonderland

Twenty years ago Clare Lake was dying, a no go area for nature lovers. The water itself was a red soup, noxious with the effluent of the adjacent bacon factory; it didn't help that the creamery was across the road and that the lake's bank had long been the town dump.

Retrieved from the clutches of industrial pollution some twenty years ago and following a Foróige Environmental Project in 1988, the prospect of real ecological renewal dawned on certain optimists of the development committee; their bold vision was of a municipal park on the erstwhile wasteland.

With a great deal of work and willpower from the local community, the whole area was turned into what it is today - a beautiful national park.

Now it is a picturesque parkland and lakeland idyll and one of the town's showpieces.

This is the rags to riches story of Clare Lake.

“Irish Heroes, Poets and Villains” - new series detailing the life and times of major Irish cultural figures to be aired on Claremorris Community Radio.

Spanning over three centuries, “Irish Heroes, Poets and Villains” is a new series recounting the lives of distinctive Irish individuals and the roles they played in the history, heritage, and culture of their respective eras - be it for good or for evil.

The series will begin on Claremorris Community Radio on Wednesday 25^th January at 4pm.

It was produced by Stephen Dunford and Tony Conway for Erris FM and was made with the support of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

The 12-part series details the lives and legacies of 12 Irish men and women whose stories remain largely overlooked to this day, yet influenced the world as they knew it and as we know it today. “Irish Heroes, Poets and Villains” features several Mayo names such as Abbey Theatre director Frederick Robert Higgins, better known to Patrick Kavanagh as the "Gallivanting Poet", Michael Mac Ruaidhri - author, folklorist, horticulturist and 1916 rebel, as well as Barney Moran - a member of the travelling community and former British soldier who assisted in the execution of Robert Emmet.

While telling the tales of these individuals, the series also incorporates various aspects of heritage, folklore traditions, local and academic history with contemporary music, song, and poetry all of which has been specifically recorded for the series.

Musical Director for the series was Ballina native Padraig MacNally, with special guest musician Steve Wickham of the Waterboys.

“Irish Heroes, Poets and Villains” will be broadcast every Wednesday at 4pm on Claremorris Community Radio over the next 12 weeks. Listeners in the local area can listen in on 94.6fm and people can also tune in from anywhere in the world via the stations website, www.claremorriscommunityradio.ie.

New documentary focusing on sexuality to be broadcast on Claremorris Community Radio

“Sexual Healing”, a new documentary focusing on the issue of sexuality, will be aired on Claremorris Community Radio on Friday January 20th at 1pm and repeated on Monday January 23^rd at 8pm.

Produced by Claremorris Community Radio and presented by Kathy Burke, this unique documentary features interviews from co-founder of the postgraduate programme in sexuality studies at Dublin City University, Dr Mel Duffy, Galway based psycho-analyst, John Foden, and practitioner of sexual medicine at the Everyman Centre, Dublin, Dr Tom Kelly.

The hour-long documentary examines various aspects of sexuality including the changing attitudes towards sex in Ireland over the years, the concept of “healthy sexuality” and the importance of sexuality in our everyday lives.

"From Narcotics to Knock" - New Documentary to be aired on Claremorris Community Radio

New documentary focusing on the drug problem in the west of Ireland to be broadcast on Claremorris Community Radio

From Narcotics to Knock', a new hour-long documentary focusing on drug and addiction problems in rural Ireland, will be aired on Claremorris Community Radio this Friday, 6^th January at 1pm and repeated on Wednesday 11^th January at 4pm.

The documentary was produced by Claremorris Community Radio volunteers and staff, and presented by Tommy O'Connor. It features interviews with Sean Foy, a community substance misuse counsellor based in Ballina, as well as Fiona McCarthy, the director of counselling at Knock Counselling Service.

The programme will also give listeners a unique insight into Cenacolo House in Knock, a rehabilitation service which takes in people from around the world who come to the west of Ireland to recover from various addiction problems.

Claremorris Community Radio would like to thank all of those involved with this project including those who contributed from Cenacolo House and who spoke about their recovery from drug addiction.

Claremorris Community Radio was last week delighted to receive 3 CRAOL Achievement Awards at an annual ceremony held in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone on Saturday 19^th November.

Merit awards were received for the Irish language programme “Noírín Beo” - a weekly show with community events and news hosted by Noírín Gannon, and Dave Edwards' specialist music show “The 60s & 70s Show”.

A distinction was also awarded to the station for the programme “Female Genital Mutilation: A Ballyhaunis Refugee Centre Project” in the Social Benefit category.

Produced by Gordon Campbell, the adjudicators described the hour-long programme as a “fantastic realisation of the potential of community radio to empower people to tell their own stories”.

“This exploration of a sensitive subject was created with courage and commitment by the women themselves, in collaboration with the station. An inspiration.”

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Aidan Long, Claremorris Community Radio Station Manager described the win as a wonderful achievement for the station: “We are absolutely delighted to receive the three awards. They are a result of the hard work and dedication that volunteers put into their radio programmes week in, week out. I would like to congratulate all of our winners – Noírín, Dave, Gordon and in particular those from the Ballyhaunis Refugee Centre for having the courage to share their stories with us. I would also like to thank Mayo Intercultural Action for their help in the production of this programme.”

CRAOL is the umbrella organisation for the twenty three fully licensed Community Radio stations throughout Ireland and offers assistance and support for ‘aspirant’ community radio stations at different stages of their development. The Achievement Awards is an annual initiative run by CRAOL which aims to highlight and reward some of the finest community radio programming in Ireland and recognise the work of community radio volunteers.

An exciting new series which looks at the many different cultures that make up our community today will begin on Claremorris Community Radio 94.6FM next Friday 25^th November at 1pm.

'My Country & Me' is a series of eight 20-minute programmes featuring interviews with current Mayo residents who come from Germany, Spain, Holland, Russia, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Pakistan and South Africa, and explores the cultures and traditions of these countries.

'My Country and Me' was funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland through it's Sound & Vision scheme and produced by Claremorris Community Radio staff over the past number of months.

The programmes will be repeated each Monday at 8pm and the last programmes in the series will be aired on Friday 16^th December.

Congratulations to Claremorris Community Radio volunteer Noírín Gannon who has been nominated for a "Charity Hero" Award!

Originally from Achill, Co. Mayo, two time cancer survivor Noirin has always, through many volunteer and fundraising projects, worked to promote a more just and fair society with community values at it's core. Organizing and supporting various events, Noirin has raised tens of thousands of euro for various causes, some of which are very close to her heart. From the elderly, homeless, cancer patients and young people, she has worked with some of the most vulnerable sections of society in her community development work.

Since joining Claremorris Community Radio 18 months ago, Noirin has presented a weekly bi-lingual show in which she promotes local charitable and community events. She has often shared her own story of her battles with cancer on air and has promoted many fundraising events throughout Mayo.

Volunteers to broadcast live for 48 hours continuously this August
Claremorris Community Radio volunteers will this month take part in a fund-raising broadcasting marathon to raise some much needed funds for the station. The station, which is owned and managed by the local community in and around Claremorris, will broadcast live for 48-hours continuously, starting on the 26^thand finishing on the 28^th August.

Listeners can not only tune into the event locally on 94.6fm but listeners around the world can also tune in online via the stations website.

On air since 2006, Claremorris Community Radio is a not-for-profit organization which is owned and managed by the local community and is one of 23 fully-licenced community stations around Ireland. The station aims to promote community development in all its aspects and the staff and volunteers of the station work hard to develop programmes and training that encourage disadvantaged groups to express their beliefs, values and needs for a better understanding within the community.

Programming on Claremorris Community Radio is made by volunteers by and for the community and the station also works with local schools, community groups and service providers to promote community development. In the past year, the station has provided training to over 100 people from the area and provides a valuable service to the community in the current economic climate.

The station relies on donations, fundraising and support from local businesses to support it's services and hopes that the community will support their local community station during this event by either donating online this August or sponsoring the volunteers taking part.

Local businesses have been very generous in supporting the station in the past and it is hoped that they will once again show their support by availing of the station's special advertising and sponsorship rates for the event.

Claremorris Community Radio have an exciting new opportunity for a Production & Marketing Assistant at the station.

The intern will gain practical experience in working on radio projects and productions from conception to broadcast. Training will be given in recording and producing live and pre-recorded radio shows, digital editing, podcasting and scheduling. The intern will also gain practical experience in marketing Claremorris Community Radio and maintaining its web presence.

This Internship is for 9-months, is unpaid and only available to those in receipt of Social Welfare. An allowance of €50 per week will be paid in addition to your current Social Welfare payment. At long last an e-mail. Apologies. Just don’t know where the time goes. I seem to be busy doing things all the time and sometimes in the evening I get lazy and say I’ll e-mail tomorrow and of course tomorrow never comes, but this morning when I woke up I said “The mission for today is e-mail, e-mail, e-mail or people will think that I have forgotten about them and all their efforts and kindness. Not the case.

First of all I would like to extend my sympathies to Sandra Gallagher and Ann McLoughlin on their family bereavements. I just heard about the death of Annie Waldron and Tom McLoughlin, two wonderful characters and family friends, the end of an era. May they rest in peace. To Ann and Sandra, two wonderful volunteers at Claremorris Community Radio, you are in my thoughts.

Where will I start:

Well KT, the jeep, is just such a gift. It is so wonderful to have it and the amount of work that gets done because of it is tremendous. I got seats put into the back and I am waiting to get windows put in when I can spare a few days without it. And needless to say I’m known everywhere with it.

The consignment of goods arrived and I divided the clothes between my 2 orphan groups and there was so much delight. The curtains will be used in the school and the hospital. We are painting the school at the moment while the students are on holiday this month. The books I have put in the school to start a school library, the computer and table are in the school also. The toys will be used in our therapy room for the orphans.

After I arrived I bought student and school supplies, text books, grain and maize for storage ‘cause it’s cheap at the moment. The student diet is still being maintained with meat once a week and milk 3 times a week. The tables are being made for the multi-purpose room and school decoration is going on at the moment. I have given a lot of time to doing up profiles of the students in Tulia School so as to identify the very needy ones and see the best way that they can be supported. So far the contribution to Tulia School is €2,699. A further €700 is due for the salary of English and Maths teacher for 2011.

The Family Sustainable Programme is working very well. We meet every Wednesday with Kamini, 26, the eldest girl and she is just wonderful. It’s amazing what just a bit of support and care can do. I took some photographs of loading up the jeep with the household shopping for this family. I’ll try and send it to you and if not I’ll show them to you when I get home in Sept. Basically what we have done is to provide this family with furnishings for their home, we don’t give everything together, cause that would defeat the educational purpose and also there would be a possibility of things being stolen from the family, life can be a bit funny here like that.!!! We paid all school fees for this year and provided for next year also because education must be continued. School supplies like bags, copies etc. We also bought them shoes and socks, underwear, school uniforms and some clothes. Each week Kamini gets 20€ for the shopping which she does after we discuss what is needed and the balance of the money is put into savings. In fact she now has enough saved in order to buy her national health insurance. She also makes charcoal which she sell locally to support the family and the children in school. It really brought tears to my eyes when she was saying thanks , which she does every day she is with us, but she said it’s not like being without our parents since Janet started to help us. This is what the Claremorris contribution has done for this family. I’m actually crying now as I’m writing. I don’t know what they would have done, I think some of them would have died. I just thank God that I went on the visit with Cecilia that day and was able to support this family. You know we do not realise how lucky and well off we are. They are such a beautiful family and it’s a privilege to be able to facilitate them. As time goes on they will be able to sustain themselves with very little support apart from school fees. We ran over budget but so what. We have spent a total of €2,744 . This also included the construction of a toilet, the long drop.

There is another family that we really have to support but it’s not possible to do this to the same extent because we haven’t the funds but basic food will be supplied because they are very mal nourished. The 2 kids are orphans and being cared for by the 80 yr old grandmother. The little boy is HIV positive and the uncle who is nearby does nothing for them!!!! It’s a very touching situation. I have given €130 for food to be purchased and given to this family on a weekly basis. It should look after them for approx 10 weeks.

I have paid the salaries for the Muthale Home Care Staff until end of 2010. €960 was the total and this ensures that that programme continues. We now have 1,670 orphans in the programme and 57 of them are HIV positive.

With regard to the Kitui Rescue Centre for orphans, vulnerable children and distressed women, which we are trying to build I have sent my proposal to the Municipal Council requesting land and of course I’m hitting the politicians etc for support and I am hopeful of success. Progress is slow but that’s the nature of things here.

As part of the Kitui OVC programme I have paid school fees for a very needy child, Daniel Mwanzia, who is in Form 2 (2 yr in secondary school) and have pledged to pay his full fees till completion 2012 which amounts to approx €600.

I continue to go out on the field visiting various women’s sustainability groups as well as functions that I attend as a representative of KDC (Kitui Development Centre).

Of course it’s not all work and no play here in Kitui. I have very nice friends and we go for the odd Tusker to unwind. Seriously the work can be demanding and culture is different so it’s important to socialise and unwind. Kamba people are very sociable and friendly and one feels very welcome here. I had a friend and her daughter from Galway visit me a few weeks ago and they were so impressed with the projects, the way of life and the friendliness of the people. They really got a good taste of rural Kenyan life. After two weeks they went to the coast and did the tourist thing and then we reunited in Nairobi and headed for safari to Massi Mara. It was something else. The sightings on the first day were exceptional. I think I counted 25 lions in total, two individual sightings of cheetah and something I had never seen before a leopard. Wow!!! I’m still reeling about it. The Mara is just so beautiful, so vast, changes of flora and fauna, scenery, if ever you come to Kenya go to Mara.

The weather is cold at the moment, certainly evening , night and morning but then it’s nice and sunny during the day. This is their winter. Nightfall approx 6.45 and certainly not a time to be driving on the roads with lots of people walking, motor bikes and cars without lights in many cases and no street lighting or footpaths. So stay off road till all have gone home.

It’s now 7.05 pm and I’m being summoned for a Tusker. Till next time Take care and stay safe.

A new environmental radio series, EcoMatters

An environmental radio series, EcoMatters, will be broadcast as part of Claremorris Community Radio’s new Summer schedule. Claremorris businesses involved in green enterprises such as renewable energy, insulation and energy rating are featured.

The first programme on Saturday 26^th June showcases the Green School activities of Gaelscoil Uileog de Burca and Mount St Michael Secondary School. Sharon Cameron, Mayo County Council’s Environmental Awareness Officer advises on how to be greener at home with recycling, composting and buying wisely.

The second programme in the series highlights the benefits of growing our own vegetables. Horticulturalist John Whittle talks about how to get started in the garden. Andy Wilson, Westport-based editor of Sustainability magazine talks about the growing popularity of community allotments and gardens. A new commercial horticulture project based in Claremorris, funded by the Arthur Guinness Fund and Clar ICH is also featured. The ‘Growing Locally’ project is the first of its kind in Ireland and will provide employment and training on growing fruit and vegetables on a commercial scale.

The 3^rd programme looks at renewable energy firms Eco Logics and Mastertherm who talk about solar, wood pellet and heat pump systems for their home heating. Mike Trench of MCM Consulting explains how the energy rating scheme works. We hear about the Warmer Homes Scheme operated by Clar ICH where older people can avail of free house insulation.

The programme will be broadcast at 2pm over three Saturdays starting on Saturday 26^th June on Claremorris Community Radio 94.6FM and is available to listen to online at www.claremorriscommunityradio.ie

Volunteer Meeting

Last night's (Monday 14th) volunteer meeting was well attended and the first stage of Aine Carr's communication and human resource project. In future further workshops, focus groups and one to one sessions will be outside of the normal volunteer meeting format. A very positive meeting with over 75% of attendees going for a 'bonding' session in Wardes. Thanks to Aine for a very productive evening.

Mayo County Football championship

The Mayo County Football championship commences this week end, with many interesting games down for decision. Of greatest interest locally is the eagerly awaited clash of Garrymore and Claremorris. There is nothing quite like a local derby to get supporters interest and this game on Saturday evening in Garrymore at 7pm does just that. Claremorris Community Radio will broadcast live commentary on the game by Austin Garvin and Billy Fitzpatrick

FETAC Level 4 course in Community Radio

The FETAC Level 4 course in Community Radio will begin on Wednesday 23rd June at the station. It will take place on Wednesday nights from 7 - 10pm with two weeks off in between (the 7th and 28th July) to give time to complete assignments. The course will finish on 18th August.There are ten volunteers currently signed up for this first course and if you have signed up and haven't paid yet, please keep in mind that the €50 administration fee must be in before the start date.

Any volunteers that would be interested in taking part in future FETAC courses at the station should contact Aidan/Kevin for more information as we are planning on running another course at the end of the summer/start of autumn.

Feile feedback

Several members of the station attended the CRAOL feile over the weekend. (A couple of pictures above.) Various workshops were attended and over the next few months all the information gained will be available in member training sessions. It was felt that the weekend was very productive and lots of practical ideas were picked up. Everybody left inspired and wishing to make a contribution to next years event.

New Schedule

The new schedule has been approved by the BAI and we will be embarking on a promo campaign leading up to the launch on Monday 21st June. A new schedule list is being designed and will be distributed later this week.

Outreach position

Competition

We have just released the competition promos and question for playing in all programmes throughout June. Please promote the competition to your friends and distribute the promo poster. (Available from the station). A good response to this campaign will help increase listenership and assist in obtaining additional funding.

Football Final between Mount St Michael’s Secondary School, and St Patrick’s Academy

Fetac Training

We are currently preparing to deliver FETAC accredited training in Community Radio later this year. Depending on numbers, the first course will take place this summer and will cost about €50 to existing Claremorris Community Radio volunteers. Candidates who sucessfully complete the course will be awarded a Fetac Level 4 Certificate in Community Radio. This cost is to cover administration fees charged to the station by FETAC. Similar courses normally cost upwards of €240 so this is a great opportunity to gain a recognised qualification for a fraction of what it would normally cost.

This 21-hour course will take you through all of the basics and background of Community Radio in Ireland and will feature practical training on the sound desk, portable recording and editing. Assesment will be carried out by CRAOL and FETAC and certificates will be awarded upon successful completion of the programme. It would be a fantastic addition to any CV and would consolidate and expand upon your existing knowlege of Community Radio broadcasting.

Numbers for the course will be limited to to 10 but more courses will be run later in the year. If you would like to sign up for this course or if you would like more information, call Aidan or Kevin on 094 937 3737 or emailaidan@claremorriscommunityradio.ie
